Why we built it

Making Tax Digital is moving hundreds of thousands of self-employed people from a once-a-year tax return to digital records and quarterly updates. The software that files those updates is well served. What is not well served is everything that has to happen first: a year of bank statements, a shoebox of receipts, and no categorised records to speak of, often with a deadline weeks away. QuickMaths exists for exactly that gap. Upload the documents you already have, and leave with organised, HMRC-aligned figures you can carry into any recognised MTD software or hand to an accountant.

How the tools work

Each tool reads a document you upload using Google's Gemini model, extracts the transactions or receipt details, and categorises them against HMRC's Self Assessment headings, with a confidence score on every row so you know what to double-check. Wherever a number can be computed rather than guessed — totals, VAT arithmetic, quarter boundaries — our own code computes it deterministically from the extracted data, so the sums always reconcile. Documents are processed in memory and never stored; results can be exported to Excel. The tools prepare data for MTD software, they do not submit anything to HMRC, and their output is not tax advice.

How we check our facts

Every guide on this site is written against primary sources — GOV.UK guidance and HMRC manuals — and lists those sources at the bottom of the page, with a visible "last reviewed" date at the top. Thresholds, rates and deadlines are re-verified against GOV.UK whenever a tax year changes or a policy is announced, and figures in worked examples are calculated, not copied. The tools are held to the same standard: we maintain an automated test suite of synthetic UK bank statements, receipts and VAT documents with known correct answers, and run the live tools against it to measure extraction accuracy before changes ship. When we get something wrong, we want to know: corrections sent to the email below are checked against the primary source and fixed with the review date updated.

Who is behind it

QuickMaths is built and run by Perry Nelson, founder of Mina Logic, an independent software studio. Perry writes and fact-checks the guides on this site personally, against the GOV.UK sources each guide cites. The site is free to use, requires no account, and is funded by advertising. QuickMaths is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, HM Revenue & Customs; nothing here is professional tax advice, and the guides always point back to the underlying GOV.UK guidance so you can verify everything yourself.
